Toyota has created this mess by putting profit over safety and quality in recent years. In his testimony recently before the Congressional committee investigating Toyota's massive recalls, Toyota President Akio Toyoda acknowledged this.
The most disturbing thing about the whole fiasco is that Toyota's own internal documents reveal that Toyota was aware of the sudden acceleration defect and other problems some time ago, but chose not to disclose or act on them. As a result, innocent people have had crashes and died.
In 2006, the Japanese government accused Toyota of improper business practices for failing to disclose and act upon reports there, over eight years, of design defects implicated in 'loss-of-control' incidents. So it's as much Toyota's integrity and credibility that is in question as it is the decline in quality.
The fact the sudden acceleration problem is now occurring in other models such as the Prius, and the growing likelihood the the real cause is not mechanical but electronic, as some experts have claimed all along, is even more problematic for Toyota's future.
Add to that the recent recalls for other serious defects, such as brakes, steering, and drive shaft and the more recent announcement of leaky oil hoses in yet four more models (not yet recalled), and the mess deepens daily.
There have been at least 15 incidents in the U.S. of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles which have already been recalled and 'fixed'.
Several class-action and individual lawsuits are being filed against Toyota for accidents (some fatal), Toyota's past refusals to fix defects for customers, and loss of resale value.
